Top 10 Common Causes of Headaches

Top 10 Common Causes of Headaches

Headaches are a common health issue which often strike millions and millions of people around the world. Headache attack can be more than a nuisance. In fact, they can be very debilitating as well. Headways and pain relievers are highly available to treat headaches but avoidance is considered as the best way to prevent headache attacks. The following are the top 10 triggers of annoying headaches.

10. Exposure to Secondhand Smoke

Smoke coming from a lighted cigarette is one of the most common triggers of headache. This is especially true when you aren’t smoking and you just have inhaled the smoke of a smoking person near you. This is called secondhand smoking and you should avoid it as much as possible to get rid of potential headache attacks.

9. Hormones

Hormones such as progesterone and estrogen affect pain chemicals in the brain. The higher the estrogen level is the more intense the headache felt. On the other hand, lower levels of estrogen can cause worse or severe headaches.

8. Altitude Change or Weather Change

Weather changes are known to cause terrible headaches especially when the barometric pressure entails sharp dips. You may also suffer from an episode of headache when moving to a place with higher altitude.

7. Certain Kinds of Foods

There are certain kinds of foods which can trigger headaches because they carry amino acid tyramin. These foods include chocolate, red wine, and peanut. Nitrate-containing foods like hotdogs, salami, and sausages can also cause headaches.

6. Blood Glucose Imbalance

When blood glucose or sugar becomes imbalance (low levels at the most), headaches can occur. This can be corrected by consuming protein-rich foods.

5. Sinuses

One of the most common reasons why people suffer from headaches is congested or dry sinuses. Generally, when a sinus-related headache is felt, the pain is usually observed in the cheekbone, nose bridge, and forehead areas. The pain becomes even worse when the head is moved intentionally or unintentionally.

4. Stress

When a person suffers from emotional, mental, or physical stress, it is more likely that he would suffer from tension headaches. One of the most common causes of stress is overexposure in front of a computer screen. Headaches caused by stress are hard to manage and eliminate. Take some breaks every thirty minutes, stretch out, and look afar to reduce stress levels.

3. Caffeine

Caffeine is known as a headache remedy but you may have headaches even when consuming caffeine. Commonly, a person who has withdrawn himself from drinking coffee can get headaches until his body gets used to the daily absence of caffeine intake.

2. Pain Medications

You may find this ironic but it’s true. In fact, the overuse of pain medications can cause rebound episodes of headaches.

1. Dehydration

Basically, dehydration is known as the most common trigger of headaches. The body simply requires constant intake of water to keep it hydrated. Water contains oxygen and it helps to drain toxins out of the body – toxins that may cause headaches at any time of the day.
