People eat in order to live and survive. However, not all foods you see are best for your body or health especially when they are eaten in certain amounts which can cause detrimental issues to your body. Yes, the food that you eat can sometimes kill you. Not the traditional kinds of course – the ones with cholesterol, refined sugars, saturated fats, chemical ingredients – but the ones which can end your life or cause terrible sickness to you.
You might have already tasted rhubarb and you simply love its taste. In fact, pies widely make use of it. When rhubarb leaves are used to cook food, this will cause infusion of oxalate to the body and may cause poisoning when taken in great amounts. Seizures and respiratory problems are the most common side effects of eating foods cooked with rhubarb leaves. Note: only the stems or stalks should be used when cooking.
9. Monkey Brains
Be careful when someone serves you with a chilled monkey brain. Primate brains may contain Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and this one’s the same as Mad Cow disease causing your brain to stop and to cause momentary death. This delicacy is popular in some regions in Asia.
Any recipe with mushrooms can be a mouthwatering treat to feast on. Mushrooms come in a wide variety and picking your own mushrooms in the forest can greatly put high risks on your part. Toadstools (other name for poisonous mushrooms) contain toxins and can make you sick and can even end your life as well.
7. Casu Marzu Cheese
This is an Italian type of cheese which is commonly left in the open to rot for days. Flies and maggots are the common things you may associate with it and maggots can survive and live inside the body causing vomiting and bloody diarrhea along the way. This may sound gross but it’s a favorite food in Sardinia.
6. Ackee Fruit
You can eat this fruit raw or mixed with your favorite dishes. Avoid the black seeds because they contain hypoglycin which can actually cause severe vomiting, coma, and even death.
5. Cassava Root
Millions of people consume cassava roots and it’s indeed a popular root crop. It’s rich in carbohydrates. However, you may suffer from poisoning when they are poorly cultivated or improperly cooked.
This may have surprised you. Hotdogs are known to cause asphyxiation. Children simply love hotdogs, so you should watch them over when eating these small meat missiles. Cut hotdogs into small pieces before serving them.

Bullfrogs are a popular food in Namibia. However, the premature ones or those which haven’t bred yet contain poison which can cause failure of the kidney. So, be careful when someone serves you with this.
2. Sannakji Choking Octopus
This is a Korean specialty. The octopus is commonly served while it’s still moving. Octopus is known to cause choking because it attaches its tentacles as well as its suction cups inside the neck of the diners causing them to choke to death.
1. Fugu Puffer Fish
This is a Japanese delicacy which may carry tetrodoxin when improperly prepared. The toxin can cause muscle paralysis and breathing malfunction. Unfortunately, there’s no antidote for this yet.
