Cars are an easy target for theft because they are left in parking lots and garages unattended with small levels of security. Also the return that the car thief can expect to gain is huge. In the United States, 800,000 cars were stolen in just 2009 and this is just the number that has been reported. 10. Volvo V70

The theft rate of this car is 3.01 per thousand, meaning a little over 3 cars of this model are stolen out of every 1000. This is somewhat a surprising entry on this list because it has been one of the low scoring models out in the open market.

9. Audi A8

This car is being produced since 1994 but it only rose to prominence in 1997 after it became the first aluminum chassis car to be mass produced in the market. Its theft rate is 3.31 per thousand.

8. Chrysler Sebring

This car was discontinued in 2010 after not winning too many positive reviews. It is a decent car for going on a vacation on, but just might not be suitable for driving around in the city. Despite the not so good, reviews, this car was stolen 3.32 times per thousand.

7. Chrysler Sebring Convertible

This is the convertible version of the number 8 entry on this list. There is no doubt that convertibles look better than conventional sedans, which could explain its significantly higher theft rate of 3.73 per thousand.

6. Mercedes-Benz CL-Class

There is no doubt in people’s minds about the high reputation of Mercedes as luxury brand. High end luxury vehicles are being made by the German manufacturers since 1926. In 2009, just 1,278 cars made it to the US and five of those ended up stolen.

5. General Motors Cadillac STS

Cadillac is considered the cream of the luxury automobile sector and even people who do not know a thing about cars would hesitate to disagree. The STS was stolen 4.28 times per thousand.

4. Nissan Infiniti M35/M45

Nissan is the largest car manufacturer in the world, and they reported a profit of $113 billion in the year 2011. This success can be partly attributed to Infiniti M luxury series, in which M35 and M45 are included.

3. Chrysler 200

This beast is a high-end sedan that made its debut back in 2003 at the New York Auto Show. This car was able to lure quite a few car thieves judging by the statistics, which say that 4.57 out of every 1000 models were stolen.

2. BMW M5

There is a significant jump in the statistics from the number 3 to the number 2 spot on this list. BMW, which is the parent company of Rolls Royce, introduced the M5 in 1984. This car was stolen 7.58 times per thousand.

1. Audi S8

The Audi S8 is a full-size four-door luxury vehicle which was introduced back in 1996. The third generation model was introduced in 1996 and tops this list as the most often stolen vehicle. 8.81 out of every 1,000 of these models ended up stolen.
