Human beings are endowed with the gift of intelligence. We are given the ability to make sound judgments and decisions and the only living thing that can contemplate our actions and reflect on them. We are capable of abstract thinking and create tools to make our lives easier. These definitions of intelligence may not be unique or limited to human beings. Some areas of intelligence can also be present in some animals. Here are the top 10 animals that show an intelligence level that is closer to ours.

10. Rat

The rats are revered as resourceful and cunning creatures according to Chinese culture. Legend has it that the first animal in the Chinese zodiac is the rat because it tricked the ox into taking it across the river and jumped right off the back of the ox to win the animal race. Rats are used in laboratory experiments by scientists and are known to find shortcuts and loopholes in mazes that they encounter.

9. Octopus

The octopus has the largest brain of any invertebrate. This sea creature can open the lid of a jar and can store both short- and long-term memories. Although they are not that sociable, scientists are starting to learn about the amazing abilities of these cephalopods.

Pigeons are plentiful in parts of the United States but are considered as pests. Despite of this, pigeons have remarkable abilities that might change the whole context of “birdbrain”. Pigeons can recognize almost a hundred images and can recall these images after a long period of time. They can also identify subtle differences in pictures which show a remarkable ability to note details.

Squirrels have long been a gardener’s enemy due to its cunningness and impressive memory. These squirrels have co-existed with humans and are able to survive. They have the intelligence to plan ahead and store food for the winter. They are able to locate these foods when the time comes that they would need it. Also, they are cunning enough to trick other animals by pretending to hide their food elsewhere.

Although pigs may seem to be dirty and lazy, pigs are highly intelligent creatures. They are known to have an intelligence level of a household pet such as a cat or a dog. They are highly trainable and survive in any area they are placed in. Pigs possess the intelligence to survive and out-compete other species.

Crows and their families are highly intelligent animals. They are innovative and find ways to simplify their tasks. Crows that live in the cities are known to drop nuts on the roads for cars to crack them open. Once the traffic lights are red, crows gather these nuts. This shows their understanding of traffic lights and innovativeness in using the cars as tools to make their work easier.

4. Elephant

Elephants have a different level of intelligence. They are known to show empathy among members in their group. This level of intelligence isn’t visible in other animals. Elephants can follow commands in captivity and are known to clean their food and use tools.

Orangutans have a socially complex society. There are roles that each member of the society must fulfill. These intelligent animals have been known to use tools and have their own system of communication. Some of them even have suicidal tendencies which show that contemplation is a part of their intelligence and thinking scheme.

2. Dolphin

Extremely sociable and quite skillful, Dolphins are one of the most intelligent animals in the world. It can perform a lot of tricks and is trainable. They have a complicated form of communications that human beings are still baffled with and are slowly starting to unravel it. Female dolphins stay with their young to teach them how to survive in the wild.

1. Chimpanzee

If you need any help trying to solve a problem, the animal that could most likely help you out is a chimpanzee. Among all animals, they have a highly evolved intelligence that could solve advanced problems. They are also capable of making and using tools, hunt in groups, and learn sign language to communicate.
