Wondering which cities in the U.S. are considered the best for recycling? Here is a list of 2009’s top ten cities recognized for their recycling programs.
10. Fremont, California
With the launch of its recycling center called Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station (FRTS), the city collected fourteen thousand tons of recycled materials. This effort saved around 1,80,000 trees and plastic bottles which were used for the creation of around 68,000 fleece jackets.
9. San Antonio, Texas
There are around 18 centers in this city that offer recycling services to the local people. These centers collect recyclable materials like plastics, metals, batteries, radiators etc. Some of these centers include Longhorn, ABC, Citywide Metal, Toucan and much more.
8. Burlington, Vermont
This city has also been recognized for its recycling initiatives. Green Mountain Power is one such program to meet the electric utility needs of the people. Another service is the Vermont Gas Systems that make use of natural gas.
7. Fresno, California
Fresno was also awarded for its recycling programs. It diverts about 73 percent of the trash to more reusable material while other cities are only able to recycle 30-50 percent of their waste.
6. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia
Recycling programs in Pittsburgh are headed by the Bureau of Environmental Services of the Public Works Division. The agency provides curbside trash collection. Small businesses are also provided with drop-off facilities.

The city’s recycling efforts are also headed by its Public Works Division. The initiative aims at providing safe waste collection and processing.
4. San Diego, California
The city has classified its recycling services in various categories. These include residents, businesses, schools and construction and demolition. Rules related to these efforts have been framed by the local government to be followed by the people.
3. Madison, Wisconsin
The city has incorporated the latest techniques of recycling in their programs. These have been implemented through the “Join Waste Watchers” and Recyclopedia. The city offers curbside trash collection and has also introduced new materials in their recycling program.

Jacksonville also emphasizes on curbside recycling services. This is applicable to both residents and business institutions in the area.

Durham has laid out a set of rules for their recycling programs. For instance, it ensures that the papers are not mixed with paper plates or napkins, newspapers can only be recycled if they are dry. Additionally, there are separate rules for recycling plastic bottles, tin-cans, junk mail, aluminium etc.
